"...I'll shave my head!..." These words were uttered by John Savage, Founder and Administrator of AIE, at the Annual Scholarship Foundation Auction on November 7, 2009. He had thrown down the gauntlet to anyone who would pick it up. "If we raise an additional $25,000 before the end of 2009, "I'll shave my head." he said. For weeks after this impulsive outburst, Mr. Savage was sure that his follicles would remain untouched. Afterall what were the odds of a small group of supporters raising those kinds of funds in a matter of eight short weeks? Word of this challenge spread - enthusiasm grew and the students at AIE were beginning to get excited. Students brought in their allowances, did extra chores to raise money and asked their parents to send in donations. As December 31st grew closer, Mr. Savage could be heard around the office nervously asking, "Do you think my hair is safe?" He was met with a resounding, "NO!". The friends and families of AIE were very generous and met the challenge by donating over $25,000 before midnight on December 31st. Students attended a special assembly on Tuesday, January 5th to witness the results of their generosity. The names of students were placed in a drawing to see who would have the opportunity to "Shave Mr. Savage's Head". Those who were called to the front got to take turns with the clippers. Mr. Savage remained a good sport and even sat long enough for his oldest son and AIE graduate, Brandon Savage, to give him a razor shave. Thanks again to the students, families and friends of AIE for helping us meet this challenge and raising funds that go directly to meeting the needs of students!
